The Importance of Avoiding Tough Decisions in Cash Games

In cash games we simply want to make more than we lose. This is highly important and all else is not that important. One fact that a lot of people neglect is the importance of avoiding really tough decisions. For instance, let us say that you have JJ and someone raises before you. You make a raise then both blinds call and the initial re-raiser will re-raise. Now based on these raises you might think that you have good odds of calling and you expect the others to do the same. Even if they play you might still want to fold. This is because you just have Jacks preflop and you need to go up against 3 possible opponents. One of them might easily have Kings, Queens or Aces, all hands that you are in a really bad shape to fight against.

Sometimes it is a better idea to simply get out of the way. A re-raise with JJ against another re-raiser might even be a bad idea from the start but this mostly depends on the analysis of the opponents. If you are just starting out in poker you really need to avoid tough decisions. A big loss can always appear and most people will eventually go on TILT. It is hard to recover. Also, in the example used above, even if you flop a set you might still lose to another set or a straight, flush, who knows?

Think about your main goal: winning more than losing. In poker there is no chance that you will just win all the time. You will also lose. I am sure you heard this before: the importance between beginners and pros is that they lose less than others with the same hands. This is because they analyze many aspects of the game and they simply get out of the way even if they could play a hand really well. The information you get from others is much more important than going against a highly difficult to win pot. No matter how aggressive you are some hands should just be folded before you get into trouble.
